Long time no see
Asian-American students react to ‘Crazy Rich Asians,’ first studio movie in 25 years featuring an all-Asian cast
Rachel Chu, the main character in Kevin Kwan’s 2014 novel “Crazy Rich Asians,” was raised by a single immigrant mother in Cupertino and graduated from MVHS. This summer, the movie adaptation was released and had the most successful romantic comedy opening in nine years, moving entire generations of Asian-Americans. Leading Chinese-American actress Constance Wu from “Fresh off the Boat” and Malaysian-British actor Henry Golding play Rachel Chu and Nicholas Young, respectively, in this romantic comedy.
“Crazy Rich Asians” delves into subjects deeper than just glamor and dating, namely the struggle for immigrants to find a balance between the preservation of tradition and adopting an American mindset.
For many Asian-American MVHS students, this is the first time they are seeing people like themselves represented on the big screen.
